Biotec Area Krems

The adsorption expertise concentrated in Krems has already led to the development of an innovative blood purification method. This resulted from cooperation between the Centre for Biomedical Technology at the Danube University Krems and two companies - BioTec Systems and Fresenius Medical Care. The jointly developed "Prometheus" system is being applied already to the treatment of acute liver failure.

There are several good reasons for Krems' role as a centre of excellence for tissue culturing. Firstly, the largest tissue bank in Austria is currently being set up there - thanks in part to international cooperation between Lower Austria's RIZ Krems (Krems Regional Innovation Centre) and the local branch of Germany's Ars Arthro GmbH. Secondly, Krems is the scene of work on methods for culturing a variety of different kinds of tissue from human and umbilical stem cells for therapeutic purposes. Cell Danube AG is a competent example for this. The company develops cancer vaccines based on dendritic cells as well as a cell therapy for incontinence.
